Arnav Kheni - Week 12 - The Power of My Bed

My bed is powerful…powerful in the sense that it has the alluring effect of instantly lowering my guard and allowing me to relax. While the title of this blog may come off as satirical, there is a certain truth behind my words. According to Psychology Today, depending on “how” you use your bed and “what meaning” you assign to it, it can affect things like sleep quality (Parker). What this essentially says is that depending on how you view your bed, your bed can reciprocate it via its effect over you. For me, it is a place of comfort, as I would assume it is for most people. For some other people, their bed is a fortress against the demon who wants to chomp at their toes. And for others, it is a place to lay their back on for five hours between the non-office working of 11 P.M. to 4 A.M.

But for me, it goes beyond that. Almost everyday, when I droopily drudge back after school, my first thought is to go to bed (except maybe after drinking water). Almost robotically, I go upstairs without much thought and collapse on my bed. Once there, compared to my thoughts earlier, my bed seems to trigger a whole symphony of thoughts. My brain reviews through all the events that occurred today. It details the things I said (and also maybe should not have said) and the work I have to do for the coming hours. But it also brings about de-stressing elements through relieving my muscle tension and just being soft, which allows me to shift my thoughts and triggers my sleepiness. My bed is a shelter within a shelter. It is a safe haven I can look forward to after school. Personally, it is an underrated sanctuary.

  1. Hi Arnav! I also love my bed, and I love the topic of your blog today! Beds definitely deserve more appreciation than they get, and it was amazing to read how the beds can actually trigger a stream of thoughts through a pattern, and how they can have these effects on you psychologically. My bed definitely provides me with a sense of comfort and escapism from the stress and workload of school as well as just being alone for some time, and it is a safe haven. I would love to just collapse into my bed after a long day of school, but I mostly try to change and get to work, because if I sit in my bed, I mostly just fall asleep or take a break for 3 hours instead of 30 minutes. Instead, I like to take a break at the very end of my work, which I am still working on myself. My bed is definitely a blessing and a curse, as it provides me with ample rest, but also stunts my productivity in several ways. In total, your blog gave me a newfound perspective and appreciation for my bed, and I do have to remember to use it for resting, and not other activities like studying or doing work. Thanks for sharing about the unusual power of a bed that takes control of your psyche, good job!

  2. Hey Arnav! You always write the most relatable blogs. I am currently writing this comment in the car on my way home from today’s early dismissal. As soon as I go home, I know I’ll immediately find my way to my bed. You are completely correct when you say laying in bed allows people to lower their guard and allows for relaxation. When I’m in my bed my thoughts automatically become more clear and my stress dies down. The phrase in your blog, “‘how’ you use your bed,” confuses me, since a bed is only typically used for relaxation purposes. My bed also hinders work, however. Whenever I am in bed, I get so relaxed to a point where I’ll feel too lazy to do anything. Laying in it makes me feel a lot less productive than if I were sitting on a chair. Beds can be both a blessing and curse sometimes. If it’s a day I rarely have homework, I can embrace my bed’s full potential. Thank you for writing this blog!

  3. Hi Arnav! My bed is also the place I collapse onto right after getting home every day. It's because I associate it with sleep and relaxation and after a long day that's the first thing I want to do. I like your description of your bed as a shelter that allows you to de-stress, because it has the same effect on me. This is both a good thing and bad thing; my bed can make me feel relaxed and forget about all my stress from school and extracurriculars, but it can also be the number one cause of me being unproductive as I become too lazy to do anything once I get in bed. Whenever I set foot in my room, I instantly have the temptation to lay down and take a nap, which is why I try to do my work outside of the house whenever possible. Your blogs are always so relatable, thanks for sharing!
