Emily - Week 10 - The Power of Food

Growl…I hear my stomach rumble as I try to ignore the fact that I skipped breakfast for the 3rd time this week. I should’ve woken up earlier, I thought to myself, looking over at my lunch and realizing I would have to wait until 1:00 PM to take a single bite of my delicious Caesar salad. Yet my growling belly couldn’t take it anymore, and I had to give in.

With a swallow of my favorite Boudin salad, I immediately felt like a new person. The refreshing crunch of the lettuce mixed in with the savory parmesan cheese, plus the crunchy croutons made out of fresh bread was a delight to munch on. I could feel my mood change as I no longer felt hungry and was able to focus on what I was supposed to be doing in class.

It’s truly a wonder how food can change us, and the power it has over us. Food, like sleep which I wrote about in my last blog, is essential to life. I couldn’t begin to think about what would happen if I didn’t get to consume the dishes I love most. It’s one of the main motivations I have for anything I do since I’m constantly thinking about what my next scrumptious meal will be (a big foodie indeed). I’ve heard many complaining about how they have no energy because they haven't eaten, and I learned that eating just a small amount of food can heal the body and fuel us for any activity. Not only does food aid us in health, but it also brings people together. Since it's Chinese New Year today, I met up with my family to eat dinner at my grandma's house as we celebrated the holiday together. Special dishes that normally wouldn't be served, including sea cucumbers and nian gao, were meaningful parts of the night that were also the tastiest.

  1. Hey Emily! This blog definitely made me hungry when I first read it, and your writing is quite vivid with your description of the Caesar and Boudin salads. Food is a major part of everyone’s lives, of course, but I like how you emphasize your personal connection to food as well as the power of it as a whole. I also like how you kept a theme between your two blogs about the essentials of life and what holds their power together. I hope you keep up with the theme! I totally agree with the fact that food can dictate your mood, and I also appreciate how you give an example, or exigence for the blog with Chinese New Year! The duality of food both creating fights and bringing people together demonstrates how food is truly essential despite it being the vital aspect of survival, and it was refreshing to be reminded of the benefits of food besides its main purpose. Good job!

  2. Hi Emily! I love how you wrote about a topic not usually recognized for its power. I think when we think about power in general and its beholders, food is not the first thing that comes to mind, so I thought it was really creative of you to introduce the power of food. In elementary school, lunch would always start at 12:50 PM and when time crept by so slowly, it felt like the lunch bell would never ring. But the reason time passed so gradually was because I was so hungry, the built-up excitement of eating the lunch I packed for myself just looming over my head. Even just the thought of devouring a delicious meal has the power to stop time and constrain focus. I also think that food can be associated with warmth and kindness. Coupled with conversation or when shared during large family gatherings, food brings people together, evoking memories that last a lifetime. Making a meal for someone who has had a bad day or sharing a meal with someone in need are actions that can stay with a person forever and that impact is showing of great power. Thanks for sharing!

  3. Hi Emily, I love the topic of your blog! Typically, people do not think of food as power, more as just an essential to life. But, I absolutely love the way you portray food in your blog! My experiences are very similar to yours. Most of the time, I don’t have time to eat breakfast before school, and end up eating my first meal of the day at 12:00 PM when school lunch starts. If I wait any longer, I tend to get hangry and am not able to focus on work. Food holds so much power over me! It literally determines how well my day will go. I enjoyed reading the details you gave us about your Caesar and Boudin salad. Is salad your favorite food? I, too, feel like a new person when I finally eat food after staying hungry for too long. Thank you for writing this blog!

  4. Hey Emily, this is probably one of the most relatable blogs I've read lol. That growling by the end of the period before lunch makes it so that our brains and bodies simply cannot give 100% to whatever we're supposed to do until that growl is satisfied. Eating can also be a sort of coping mechanism where it helps take your mind off the many difficult things in life and replace them with the flavor and appreciation for food. Some of my favorite dishes, especially when shared with friends and family, always make my mouth water and just the thought of those large gathering dinners or quick McDonald’s stops with friends never fail to put a smile on our faces.
